Peace, one and all, wherever you may be...
I wanted to add another of Mevlana Jalaluddin's poetic reflections. As seems to be the case with many of his poems, conceives of God in touching terms.
Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim...
'Love of the dead does not last,
because the dead will not return.
But love of the living
is in every moment fresher than a bud,
both to the inward and outward eye.
Choose the love of the Living One
who is everlasting, who offers you
the wine that increases life.
Do not say, "We have no entrance to that King".
Dealings with the generous are not difficult'.
(Mathnawi I.217-219, 221)
As I was reading this I was reminded of the film Trainspotting, in which the opening monologue says, "Choose Life...". Here, by contrast, Rumi asks us to reflect not on life but on the One who gave it (and hence, will take it away again). Subhan Allah!
